Life challenges us through our relationships or the lack of them, work or the lack of it and what we bring to Adulthood from our inheritance and our upbringings. Expectations - our own and those of ‘Society’ can also be unhelpful. The pace of Life as well as difficulties in finding a sense of meaning, purpose and community can all lead people to feel confused, lost and sometimes in despair.
Clients often come to therapy because they are in emotional pain about their relationships or their working lives, some people have regrets to do with their past, anxiety about the future and difficulties in enjoying the present. There are often complex and deep rooted ‘ways of being’ that contribute to such obstacles to happiness - ways of being that often were used as survival mechanisms at an earlier point but that have outgrown their usefulness. Deciphering some of this can be clarifying and ultimately liberating.
I prioritise the providing of a safe, reliable, thoughtful and supportive therapeutic space where clients can “think together” with me about their Life and their relationships, getting to know themselves better. I aim to listen sensitively and with compassion to the ‘whole’ person. As well as what is brought by my clients I am mindful of what might be less easy to think about and what might be communicated unconsciously.
